“Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengence is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:9-21
Week 6 of Romans: The Gospel Centered Life focuses on Romans 12:12-13:24 and how we as Christians should act, not only in the presence of others, but also behind closed doors. I love the message from day 3 which completely summed up the week for me: “From our relationship with God to our relationship with the body of Christ and the world around us, we are called to live out gospel principles in those relationships” (p. 130) Our life as Christians can be summed up like this: In everything you do, point the world to the gospel. As believers, the gospel has transformed us and in light of that, we have to live differently. We are called to love, honor, rejoice and be patient with each other. We are to be in a constant state of prayer. We are to meet others’ needs and show hospitality to one another. We need to live peacefully with one another even if we don’t agree with them and we are to LOVE EACH OTHER AS WE LOVE OURSELVES. Love is the fulfillment of the Law and is the highest calling we have. We are called to live as a light in the world and to point others to THE light, to THE gospel message and to the LIVING HOPE that is only found in Jesus.
Why is that so important? Because we were not made for the here and now; we were created for the eternal. Our desire for the world should be the same as Jesus’ desire – that all should be saved. And although not everyone will choose to believe, we need to live and proclaim the gospel, in both WORDS and ACTIONS, like they would be. We don’t know the mind of Christ and who He has chosen as His own, therefore we have to be dedicated to sharing His love with everyone. What if YOU are the only Jesus someone sees?
Keep an eternal perspective.
Live your love for God.
Point the world to the Gospel.
