Harry Potter. Twilight. The Walking Dead. Halloween. Harmless entertainment, right?
I was in a conversation with some moms the other day about these things and the number of times “do what you feel is right” or “the decisions made inside your own home are personal and based on your own convictions” was mentioned was alarming to me. I know this is a very touchy subject, so please hear me out. The bottom line of the matter is this: GOD’S TRUTH IS NOT RELATIVE, IT’S ABSOLUTE. It doesn’t matter what my personal thoughts or feelings are, what does GOD say is right? What does HIS WORD say about things that I am to associate myself with?
Scripture is very clear that light and dark have no fellowship with one another (2 Corinthians 6:14)
Scripture is very clear that sorcery, witchcraft and deception are all fleshly distractions and are not beneficial for those seeking to bear spiritual fruit in their life (Galatians 5:19-21)
Scripture is very clear that as a believer I am to walk in the light of God (1 John 1:5-7)
Scripture is very clear that as a parent, I am to train up my children in the ways of the Lord and teach them to obey His commands (Deuteronomy 6:1-9)
Oddly enough, the very next morning my Bible Study was on Romans 12:1-2, be transformed by the renewing of your mind. As you’ve heard it said before, what goes into your mind comes out. Out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. What you think about controls you. From a physical standpoint, your mind, your brain, is the central part of your body. If your brain is not in good, healthy working condition, neither is your body. The same is true for us spiritually. Our minds have to be transformed by the Spirit, not conformed to the world. And when we entertain these “harmless” books and movies in our homes we are filling our minds with deception and lies and giving the devil a foothold to stand on. It may not be now, it may be 20 years from now, but Satan can, has and WILL use the images or the words against you. Think how many times you recall song lyrics or movie scenes from the past. Think how many times something has come out of your mouth and you thought, “where did that come from?” Every little piece of information that enters your brain takes up residence and you are hard-pressed to get it out. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want the neighborhood in my mind to become one that invites sin into my life. But it’s hard. What you think about, what you hear, what you see on TV or read in a book can single-handedly lead you into sin.
Paul tells us in Romans 12:1-2 to be TRANFORMED by the renewing of our mind. Our society bombards us with lies that say what we watch, what we listen to, what we read doesn’t matter. But guys. It does. We have to guard our eyes, we have to guard our ears, and we have to guard our minds from anything that contradicts what God’s Word says. And as a Christian parent, we are responsible for guarding our children from those things as well. Does that mean we will never encounter it? Does that mean we can completely isolate our kids from it? Does that mean we have to live in a sheltered bubble away from everything and everybody? No. But we do have to know the truth of the Word so that when we encounter those things the Spirit within us can take over and cover the lies with God’s truth. We do have to CHOOSE to be proactive in what we allow our minds to entertain. We cannot purposely fill our eyes and our minds with “harmless entertainment” and expect to not be affected. We cannot purposely entertain deception when the Bible clearly tells us to flee from all evil and to walk in the light. We do have to model Christ-like behavior for our kids who are not mature enough to understand these things yet. We do have to choose to let Christ transform us instead of letting the world conform us. Is it popular? No. But we weren’t told to be popular. We were told to be holy, to be set apart (1 Peter 1:16). We were not made for the here and now, we were made for the eternal; and we have to live like it. The more that we immerse ourselves in Scripture and learn the truth of the Word and the truth of who God is, our thinking will change. Our desires and our motives will change. It’s called transformation. And it only comes from God. Are we going to mess up? Yes, we’re human. But we have to choose to be more controlled by the Spirit than what the world says is popular. What it ultimately comes down to is this: how is your witness being affected by the things that you say you watch on TV or by the books that you read or by the music that you listen to? Are you ok with your kids repeating or acting out things that they have seen you watch or heard on the radio?
I love how Kristen Schmucker says it in her Romans Study, “Three times the word think is repeated [in Romans 12:3, ESV], reminding us that our minds must be transformed as we learned in verse two. Our thinking must change in order for us to change. And it is the Word of God through the Spirit that changes us into the image of Christ. We are called to have the mind of Christ…We are called to think like Him and then to live like Him…”
“Hate what is evil; cling to what is good” Romans 12:9
“Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things” Philippians 4:8
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” James 4:7
Guard your mind. Fill it with the Words of God and then live in the light of the calling you have received. Be transformed by His Spirit. And then live it loud. ❤
